Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Choosing the Right Financial Advisor:
What is a CFP® and why does it matter?
A CFP® (CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®) is a financial professional who has completed rigorous education requirements, passed a comprehensive board exam, accumulated thousands of hours of hands-on planning experience, and commits to ongoing continuing education every two years. The CFP® designation is widely recognized as a rigorous standard in financial planning. More importantly, all CFP® professionals are committed to act as a fiduciary at all times - meaning they are obligated to put your financial interests ahead of their own. Not all financial advisors hold this standard, so working with a CFP® gives you an extra layer of protection and confidence.
Are you a fiduciary? What does that mean for me?
Yes. We act as fiduciaries at all times, which means we are legally and ethically obligated to put your best interests first. Every recommendation we make is designed to help you achieve your financial goals - not to generate commissions or serve outside interests. We believe trust is the foundation of every successful advisory relationship.
How do I know if I need a financial advisor?
If you're approaching retirement, managing significant assets, navigating a major life transition, or simply want greater confidence in your financial future, working with a financial advisor can provide clarity and direction. A professional advisor can help you make informed decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and stay focused on your long-term goals.
Our Services:
What services do you provide?
We offer comprehensive financial planning and investment management tailored to your needs. Our services typically include retirement planning, portfolio management, tax-efficient investment strategies, estate planning coordination, risk management, education planning, and ongoing financial guidance.
Do you only manage investments?
No. Investment management is just one part of what we do. We help clients make smart financial decisions across all areas of their lives, including retirement income planning, tax strategy, estate planning coordination, insurance analysis, and cash flow management.
Do you work with my CPA and attorney?
Absolutely. We believe the best outcomes come from a coordinated approach. We regularly collaborate with clients' CPAs, estate planning attorneys, and other professionals to ensure every aspect of your financial plan works together efficiently.
Fees and Costs:
How do you charge for your services?
We are a Fee-Only, AUM-based (assets under management) fee firm. This means our fee is calculated as a percentage of the assets we manage for you. We do not earn commissions, kickbacks, or referral fees from any financial products. This structure helps align our interests directly with yours: when your portfolio grows, so does our fee. When your portfolio declines, our fee declines too. There are no hidden charges, transaction fees, ticket charges, product upsells, or sales quotas driving our recommendations. During our initial consultation, we will walk you through the exact fee schedule based on your situation.
Do you have account minimums?
Our minimums vary depending on the services you need. We focus on building long-term relationships with clients who value comprehensive financial planning and professional investment management. We would be happy to discuss whether our firm is the right fit for your situation.
Investment Philosophy:
What is your investment philosophy?
Our investment philosophy is grounded in evidence-based principles. We focus on long-term discipline, diversification, tax efficiency, and risk management. Rather than attempting to time markets, we build diversified portfolios designed to help clients achieve their goals across changing market conditions.
How do you manage risk?
Risk management begins with understanding your goals, time horizon, and comfort level. We construct diversified portfolios aligned with your needs and regularly monitor them to ensure they remain appropriate. Our goal is to help you take the right amount of risk - not more than necessary.
How often do you review portfolios?
We continuously monitor portfolios and formally review them on a regular basis. Portfolios are rebalanced as needed to maintain alignment with your target allocation, financial goals, and market conditions.
Working Together:
What happens during the first meeting?
The first meeting is a no-obligation introductory conversation. There's nothing to prepare and nothing to sign. The goal is simple: for us to get to know each other. We'll talk about where you are financially, where you want to go, and what's been standing in the way. We'll ask about your goals, any concerns you have, and what you've tried before. You'll also have the chance to ask us anything about our process, credentials, and fees. If we're a mutual fit, we'll outline the next steps. If not, we'll do our best to point you toward resources that are a better match. There's no pressure either way.
How often will we meet?
Most clients meet with us one to two times per year for formal portfolio and planning reviews. Outside of scheduled meetings, you can reach us by email or phone whenever questions come up; life doesn't always wait for a quarterly review. We also proactively reach out when there are meaningful changes in the market, tax law, or your financial situation that warrant attention. You'll never feel like you're in the dark. Communication style is flexible - some clients prefer detailed written summaries; others prefer a quick call. We'll figure out what works best for you.
How do you measure success for my financial plan?
Success isn't just about investment returns - it's about whether your financial plan is moving you closer to the life you want. We measure success across several dimensions: progress toward your goals (retirement, education funding, financial independence, legacy); portfolio performance benchmarked appropriately for your risk tolerance and time horizon; tax efficiency - keeping more of what you earn; and confidence - you feel informed, and in control of your financial future. At every review, we check in on all of these dimensions - not just the numbers on a statement.
Will I work with one advisor or a team?
You will have a primary advisor who serves as your main point of contact, supported by a team of professionals. This team-based approach ensures you receive personalized attention along with the depth of expertise and continuity you deserve.
What if my financial situation changes significantly?
Life changes and your financial plan should too. Whether it's a job change, inheritance, divorce, new child, or unexpected health event, we are here to help you adapt. As an ongoing client, you're encouraged to reach out anytime something significant changes in your life - not just at scheduled reviews. We'll reassess your plan together and make adjustments that keep you on track toward your goals. This is one of the most important advantages of working with a dedicated professional versus a robo-advisor or a one-time planning session.
Do you work with clients virtually, or do I need to be local?
We work with clients both virtually and in person - whatever feels most comfortable for you. Our two offices are located in Roanoke and Fredericksburg, Virginia, and we welcome local clients who prefer to meet face to face. That said, we have clients all across the country and we're fully equipped to give them the same level of service, virtually.
